MOTOR VEHICLE EXCISE TAX
INFORMATION
Motor vehicle excise tax is assessed and levied each calendar year for every motor vehicle that is registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The rate of the excise tax is $25.00 per $1,000.00 worth of valuation and the tax is calculated from the date of registration to the end of the calendar year.
The informational data, as it appears on your vehicle registration, is sent to the Town by the Registry of Motor Vehicles for us to generate a bill. It is very important that the information that appears on the registration is accurate, particularly the mailing address and the place of garaging. An error in these data fields can cause a tax to be generated from the wrong town.
Failure to pay an excise tax will result in the inability to renew your license and/or automobile registration until all delinquent taxes are paid. Interest, penalties and fees can not be waived.
Failure to receive an excise tax bill does not invalidate the tax or the proceedings for collection. A person who does not receive a bill is still liable for the tax and any interest and charges accrued. Please contact the collector’s office if you do not receive a motor vehicle bill during the calendar year.
If the status of the motor vehicle changes during the calendar year, please contact the Assessor’s office at 413-862-6203 or visit the Assessor’s section of this website to begin the process of abatement.
